Fulton Students Win 8th Consecutive County Envirothon Title

and Place 11th at New York State Envirothon

 

On May 5, 2011, the 21st annual Oswego County Envirothon was held the Oswego County Nature Park at Camp Zerbe. Students from seven-time defending champion G. Ray Bodley (GRB) High School took first place in the event. Team A members Maddy Clark, Jenna Doherty, Morgan Stafford, Josh Strauss, and Amanda Trombly were this year’s winning combination. Pulaski High School came in second, Mexico placed third, and GRB team B placed fourth. Students from Central Square and Oswego high schools also vied for top honors at the event which was coordinated by the Oswego County Soil and Water Conservation District. Primary sponsors for the event were Entergy Nuclear Northeast and the Indeck - Oswego Energy Center.

At the Envirothon, students on the eight participating teams were tested on their knowledge in the subject areas of aquatics, current environmental issues, forestry, soils, and wildlife. They also completed an oral presentation component. Teams achieving the highest score in a particular category received medals for their accomplishment. Team A from G. Ray Bodley won first place in Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, and Oral Presentation. Pulaski won first place in Current Issues and Wildlife. The Spirit Award was won by Mexico and GRB team A earned the Most Unified Team Award.

As recognition for their first place overall performance, each member of the winning team from G. Ray Bodley High School will receive a $100.00 Hank Cosselman Memorial Scholarship from the Oswego County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and a $100.00 scholarship from NRG Oswego Harbor Power.

The success of this year’s event was made possible by the participating students and advisors, many volunteers, and the additional support of numerous local sponsors; Agrimark/Cabot Dairy Farmers, Ben & Jerry’s, Fulton Screen Printing, Hannibal Village Market IGA, National Grid, New York Master Forest Owners, New York Water Environment Association, Inc., Novelis Corporation, Pepsi, and Price Chopper.


The Envirothon students from GRB participated in the New York State Envirothon at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY on May 25 and 26. They placed 11th out of 56 teams.
